What are cookies?
This Cookie Policy explains what cookies are and how we use them, the types of cookies we use (the information we collect using cookies and how that information is used), and how to manage the cookie settings.
Cookies are small text files that are used to store small pieces of information. They are stored on your device when the website is loaded on your browser. These cookies help us make the website function properly, make it more secure, provide a better user experience, and understand how the website performs.
How do we use cookies?
We keep it small. For most visitors our own site only stores two things in your browser: your cookie choice and your light or dark theme. Neither identifies you. If you choose to always load videos, we remember that too. Sign-in cookies are only set for Real Projects owners who sign in. There are no advertising or affiliate cookies. The only third-party cookies are from Google Analytics, which help us understand how the website is used, and they are only set after you give consent in the cookie banner.
Videos are click-to-load. Until you press play, nothing is loaded from YouTube or Vimeo, so they cannot set cookies. When you press play, the player loads from YouTube in privacy-enhanced mode (youtube-nocookie.com) or from Vimeo with “do not track” switched on, and their own cookie rules apply from then on.
Cookies we set
Strictly necessary (always active)
These are required for the site to work as you set it up. They cannot be switched off. Apart from the sign-in cookie, they live in your browser’s local storage rather than in cookies, but they do the same job.
| Cookie | Provider | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| offgriddr-consent-v1 | offgriddr.com | Remembers your cookie consent choice (stored in localStorage). | 1 year |
| theme | offgriddr.com | Remembers your light/dark mode preference (stored in localStorage by next-themes). | 1 year |
| offgriddr:always-load-video | offgriddr.com | Only set if you choose to always load videos straight away (stored in localStorage). | Until you clear your browser data |
| sb-…-auth-token | offgriddr.com | Keeps Real Projects owners signed in. Only set when you sign in. | Until you sign out, at most 400 days |
Analytics (consent required)
These cookies are only set after you click Accept in the cookie banner, or enable Analytics in Customize. Reject keeps them off, and removes any analytics cookies previously set.
| Cookie | Provider | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| _ga | Google Analytics (GA4) | Distinguishes unique visitors. | 2 years |
| _ga_6Q4VL39K5N | Google Analytics (GA4) | Persists session state for the GA4 property. | 2 years |
We use Google Analytics 4 with IP anonymization implied by default (GA4 no longer logs full IPs). Google’s own data practices are documented in the Google Privacy Policy and How Google uses cookies.
