The problem
DC cables are in. AC cables are in. The three Multiplus 2 units boot up and the panel lights cycle. But the Cerbo GX won't recognise them as a coherent three-phase set, and nothing wants to talk to anything else. Software, not wiring.
What you need
Two things on the bench:
- A laptop.
- A Victron MK3 USB interface. This is a small adaptor that bridges the V1 (VE.Bus) port on the Multiplus to a standard USB-A port on the laptop. It's the only way to push settings or new firmware into the inverters.
On the software side, Victron's free VE Configure tool, downloadable from victronenergy.com. Installing it also installs VE Flash (firmware uploader) and the VE.Bus System Configurator (the tool that maps which inverter is on which phase).
Detaching the Cerbo from the bus
The V1 cable normally daisy-chains through all three Multiplus units and ends at the Cerbo. For the firmware update, that last link gets pulled off the Cerbo and plugged into the MK3 interface. The MK3 sits between the V1 cable and the laptop.
Flashing the firmware
The flow inside VE Flash:
- Start.
- Yes, update firmware.
- Select file, then pick the firmware version.
- Confirm everything else is unplugged.
- Auto-detect COM port. It finds COM 5.
- "Switch off device": power off the first Multiplus.
- "Switch on device": power it back on.
- Confirm. The firmware uploads.
Then repeat the same steps for Multiplus 2 and Multiplus 3. Identical firmware on all three units. This is the prerequisite for them to behave as a coordinated three-phase set.
Configuring as three-phase
Open the VE.Bus System Configurator. Select three phases, confirm three phases again on the second dropdown, click OK. The three Multiplus units appear at the top of the screen. Drag each one to L1, L2, or L3. This is where the assignment of physical inverter to phase happens, and it has to match what's actually wired.
Per-inverter settings via VE Configure
Right-click L1 → VE Configure Multi. The Multiplus on L1 is read out into the tool. Settings to walk through:
- Frequency: 50 Hz. Leave it. Standard in NL.
- Shore current limit. The grid connection is 3 × 25 A, so this caps at 25 A per phase. This is the inverter's contract with the grid feed.
- Grid code. This one is one-shot. Pick Europe → EN50549-1. The tool warns explicitly that this setting can only be applied once. Read it twice before clicking OK.
- Assistants tab. Add an assistant → ESS (Energy Storage System) → Start assistant. The wizard walks through the pack characteristics: capacity, battery type, target SoC behaviour. Answer based on the actual build.
Once the assistant is done, back in the main VE Configure screen, click "Send settings to this device". The Multiplus reboots with the new configuration.
Reusing the same settings on units 2 and 3
Robbert saves the settings to a file (File → Save settings). That file is the source of truth for the second and third Multiplus units, which need identical configuration.
For each remaining unit:
- In the System Configurator, right-click L2 → VE Configure Multi.
- Wait for connection and read-out.
- File → Load settings → pick the saved file.
- Acknowledge the security warning.
- Send settings to this device. The Multiplus reboots.
Repeat for L3. Three minutes per unit, no risk of typing a different shore-current limit on one of them.
Putting the Cerbo back in the loop
When all three are flashed and configured, the MK3 is no longer needed. The data cable comes off the MK3 and plugs back into the Cerbo's VE.Bus port.
Open the Victron Connect app on the Cerbo GX and the three Multiplus units now appear, recognised, listed by phase. Live per-phase consumption shows up. The set isn't wired into the meter cupboard yet at this stage of the project, so the numbers are small (5, 7, 8 W of self-consumption), but the communication path is verified end to end.
Where this fits
This is the bridge between "the hardware is mounted" and "the system can be commissioned". Without this step the Cerbo doesn't see the inverters, and without the grid code and the ESS assistant the inverters won't feed back to the grid even if everything else is correct. The next step is wiring the system into the meter cupboard and configuring the Cerbo for grid-tie operation.
