The summer is here and the pool is set up, so it is time to install a pool cover. I want this cover to keep dirt out, close the pool, warm the water with the sun, and stop water from evaporating so fast at night.
Normally, this cover is made for an above-ground steel frame pool and cannot be mounted directly on my wide built-in pool edge. By using a custom 3D printed block, I am able to mount the cover securely on top of the edge.
Steps
Step 1: Introduction of the pool and the plan to install a pool cover
The sun is finally out and the pool is all ready in the garden. Because of this, we are going to move on to the next step and install a pool cover.
Step 2: Preparing to install the pool cover
The summer is here and the pool is ready, so I am going to install a pool cover. This cover has many functions like keeping dirt out, closing the pool, and letting the sun heat the water. I also use solar heaters and heat pumps to warm the water.
The cover stops water from evaporating so much, which keeps the water from cooling down too fast at night and holds the heat. It also lets us swim in the rain and extends the swimming season so it stays warm inside the tent when it gets cold outside.
Step 3: Choosing the pool cover and identifying the mounting problem
For the cover, I use a 3m pool cover from Exit Toys. This cover is made for an above-ground pool with a steel frame, and it comes with a bracket to attach it to the frame.
We have a built-in pool with a wide edge, so we cannot mount the cover on it in the normal way. Because of this, we have to use another method.

As usual, I am going to use my 3D printers to mount the cover on top of the edge. Normally, the hinge is attached to the pool edge with brackets, but we cannot mount it anywhere like that here.
Instead, I use a printed block. I bolt this block to the frame and I also drive the screws through the tile.

The brackets are now on the pool, so it is time to put the cover itself together. I start by putting the tent poles through the cover fabric.
Now that the tent poles are through the sail, we can lay the cover onto the pool.

These covers are not originally designed to be placed on this type of pool. With a small adjustment in the form of a 3D print, which I will share in the description, it is still possible to mount it on the wall.
It is not completely perfect because normally it drops away behind the pool. When I mount it on the front here, it stays open just a little bit, and I will have to think of something for that. You can place this cover on a built-in pool and use it as a greenhouse or for a thousand other ways.
Step 7: Takeaways
An Exit Toys above-ground pool cover can be adapted for a built-in pool using a custom 3D printed block.
The 3D printed mounting block bolts to the frame and screws through the tile.
Mounting the cover on the front leaves a small gap at the back that requires an additional solution.
Everything I used
| Item | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Exit Toys 3m pool cover | 1 | Made for an above-ground pool with a steel frame |
| 3D printed block | 1 | Used to mount the cover on the built-in pool edge |
| 3D printers | Used to make the custom mounting part | |
| Tent poles | Inserted through the pool cover sail |
Using the cover on a built-in pool
The pool cover is successfully installed on the built-in pool using a custom 3D printed part. While there is a small gap at the back that needs a future solution, the cover can now serve multiple purposes like a greenhouse.
