Six steps, in order, written for someone who has never sized a solar array or read a battery datasheet. Each one answers a question and links to the article or calculator that goes deeper. Read it end-to-end in about ten minutes, then pick the parts you want to revisit.

Step 1 · What am I getting into?
What does living off-grid actually mean?
Off-grid means your house is not connected to the public power line. You make every kWh you use, store what you don't use right away, and live within whatever your system can produce. It's about ownership, not asceticism. The first article walks through what changes day-to-day, what stays the same, and the trade-offs nobody tells you about up front.

Step 2 · Solar, wind, hydro, or a mix?
Which energy source fits your site?
Most properties have one obvious answer. Sun in a clear sky. Wind on a ridge. A stream running through the back. Some have two, very few have three. Pick by what your site offers, not by what sounds romantic. Hybrid setups exist for a reason and we cover when they earn their cost.

Step 3 · Watts, kWh, what should I aim for?
How much power do you actually use?
Before you can size anything, you need to know your draw. A fridge is not 'a fridge', it's a measured number on a label, multiplied by the hours it runs. Most people guess high and overbuild, or guess low and freeze in February. Walk through every device, then double-check with the yearly-kWh calculator.

What pieces make a system?
A working off-grid system is five or six components, not one product. Source (panels, turbine, micro-hydro), charge controller, battery bank, inverter, monitoring, and the safety bits between them. Each has a job. Skip one and the rest behaves badly. This is the map of the parts list.

Step 5 · What's the part nobody mentions?
The costs and the catches
The price tag on a system is one thing. The cost over its life is another. Permits, insurance, batteries that wear out after 8 to 15 years, the winter month where the sun barely shows up, the day a charge controller dies. Read the trade-offs before you commit. Off-grid is freedom from utility bills, not freedom from spreadsheets.
