What To Know Before Going Off-Grid With Solar

Going off-grid sounds romantic. No more electric bills. No more dependence on the power company. Just you, your roof, and the sun.

It can be all of that. It can also be cold showers in February when the batteries hit empty.

Here's an honest checklist. Walk through it before you spend a single euro.

How Much Power Do You Actually Use

This is step one, and most people skip it.

Pull out your power bills from the last year. Look at the kilowatt-hours used each month. That's your real number.

A typical European house uses 8 to 12 kWh a day. An American house uses 25 to 30. A small off-grid cabin can run on 3 to 5.

If you don't have bills (new build, off-grid from day one), walk around with a list. A fridge: 1 kWh a day. A laptop: 0.2. A washing machine: 1 per load. An electric kettle: 0.1 per use. Add it all up.

How Much Sun You Really Get

A panel in southern Spain makes nearly twice the power of the same panel in the Netherlands.

You need to know your region's peak sun hours. A few rough numbers:

  • Southern Spain: 5 to 6 peak hours
  • Texas: 5 to 6
  • Germany: 3
  • Netherlands, UK: 2.5 to 3.5

But the yearly average hides a problem. Winter is much darker than summer. A roof in northern Europe might give you 6 peak hours in June and 1 peak hour in December.

If you're fully off-grid, plan for the worst month, not the average. Otherwise you'll run out of power every winter.

Pick The Right Panel Type

There are three main panel types. Each one fits a different situation.

Monocrystalline panels are the most efficient. Best for small roofs where every square meter matters.

Polycrystalline panels are cheaper per watt. Best when you have lots of space.

Thin-film panels are flexible. Best for curved surfaces, boats, vans, or backpacks.

For a typical off-grid house, mono is usually the answer.

Batteries Are The Hard Part

Solar panels are easy. Batteries are where off-grid gets expensive and complicated.

Without a grid to fall back on, your batteries are your only buffer between sundown and sunup. They need to hold enough power for the whole night, plus a few cloudy days.

A common rule: store 2 to 3 days of your daily power use. If you use 10 kWh a day, you need a battery bank that holds 20 to 30 kWh.

Lithium batteries (like LiFePO4) last 10 to 15 years and handle deep discharges. They cost more upfront but are usually worth it. Old-style lead-acid batteries are cheaper but die in 3 to 5 years.

Panels and batteries on their own don't work. You need the rest of the system.

Plan A Backup

Even a well-designed off-grid system can run out. Two weeks of dark winter weather can drain even a big battery bank.

Most off-grid homes have a backup. Options include:

  • A small petrol or diesel generator (cheap to buy, expensive to run, noisy)
  • A wood-burning stove for heat (cuts your electricity load in half in winter)
  • Staying grid-tied as a safety net (you become "grid-tied with battery backup")

It's not a failure to have a backup. It's a system that works in all weather.

Check The Local Rules

Permits and codes vary wildly between regions.

Some places want a permit for any solar install. Some don't. Some require a licensed electrician. Some let you do it yourself. Some have strict rules about wiring, mounting, and grounding.

Get this wrong and you can be fined or forced to tear it all out. Worse, an uninsured system means your home insurance might not cover any damage.

The Budget

A solid off-grid system for a typical home costs between 15,000 and 40,000 euros, depending on size, batteries, and labour.

That's a lot. But here's the long view.

A regular electric bill for a similar house might be 150 euros a month. Over 25 years, that's 45,000 euros. Off-grid pays itself off in 8 to 12 years and gives you 15 more years of free power.

You can also reduce the upfront cost. Tax credits, rebates, government incentives, and DIY labour all chip away at the number.

Plan For Maintenance

Solar systems are low-maintenance, not zero-maintenance.

  • Wipe the panels once or twice a year to clear dust and bird droppings
  • Check the wiring and connections once a year for damage
  • Replace the inverter every 10 to 15 years
  • Replace lithium batteries every 10 to 15 years

A monitoring system makes this easier. It pings you when something stops working.

Lifestyle Shift

This part is often missing from the brochures.

Off-grid means you watch the weather. You think about how much washing to run on a cloudy day. You plan your kettle around peak sunshine.

Some people love it. The connection to the sun, the feeling of being self-sufficient, the satisfaction of powering your own life.

Some people hate it. The mental load, the worry about the batteries, the cold shower in February.
