Why Wind Is Different From Solar
A solar panel sits there. The sun hits it. It makes power. There's nothing inside to wear out. People install panels and forget about them for 25 years.
A wind turbine is a different animal.
It has blades that spin. A shaft that turns. Bearings that take the load. A brake that catches it in storms. None of those things sit still. They all rub, push, or hold something heavy. So they all wear out.
The good news? A well-maintained home turbine lasts 15 to 25 years. The bad news? An ignored one might last five.
The difference is whether someone bothers to climb up and look.
The Quarterly Walk-Around
Every three months, do a check. Most of it happens from the ground with a pair of binoculars and a good look at the base of the tower.
Start with the bolts at the base. Tower bolts loosen over time, especially after a strong storm. A loose bolt is fine. A loose bolt nobody catches is how towers fall over. Tighten any that feel even slightly off.
If your tower is held up by guy wires (the angled cables that brace it like a tent), check the tension. They should feel firm, like a tight guitar string. A slack guy wire means the tower is fighting the wind alone, which it wasn't designed to do.
Next, look at the blades. The leading edge, where the air hits first, takes a beating. Hail, dust, the occasional bug at high speed. Over time it gets chipped and rough. A chipped blade pulls slightly differently than a smooth one, which means the rotor isn't balanced anymore. An unbalanced rotor shakes. A shaking rotor wears out its bearings.
Small chips you can sand and paint. Big chips need a repair kit, sometimes a whole new blade.
Then there's the brake. Most home turbines have a brake that can stop the blades in a strong gust. Test it. If it doesn't catch firmly, get it serviced before the next storm.
Finally, just stand there for a minute and listen. A healthy turbine has a steady whoosh. A sick one rattles, grinds, or hums at a new pitch. Your ears will catch things your eyes miss.

The Annual Deep Check
Once a year, the turbine deserves a proper look. This is usually where you call a professional, unless you really know what you're doing and have the right safety gear.
The bearings get the biggest attention. Bearings are the small rings of balls that let the shaft spin smoothly. They take all the weight of the blades and rotor. If a bearing goes, the shaft wobbles, and the whole turbine can shake itself apart.
A pro listens to the bearings with a special probe, the way a doctor uses a stethoscope. A healthy bearing whispers. A dying one growls.
On older turbines, there's also a thing called a slip ring with little carbon brushes. These let electricity flow out of a part that's spinning. The brushes wear down like pencil tips. If they get too short, the turbine stops making power. Replacement is cheap. Ignoring them is expensive.
The generator itself gets a look too. Generators are simple, but they don't like dust, moisture, or mice. Yes, mice. They love warm dry boxes at the top of towers. Find a nest in your generator and you've found your problem.

What About Lubrication?
This used to be a big deal. Old wind turbines needed oiling like a tractor.
Most modern small turbines are sealed. The bearings come pre-greased and stay that way for years. No oil cans needed.
But check your manual. Some designs still want a few drops every season. Skipping it on a turbine that needs it will cost you bearings.
After A Storm: Always Look
This one is non-negotiable.
After any big storm, climb up (safely, with proper gear, or hire someone) and check three things.
Tower bolts at the base. Storms shake them loose more than anything else.
Guy-wire tension. Wind doesn't always blow on the bolts you can see. Sometimes it pulls sideways on the wires.
Blades. Look for cracks or chips you didn't see before. A blade that survives a storm with a crack will break the next time.
If anything looks off, shut the turbine down with the brake and don't run it until you've fixed it. A small problem caught now beats a big one when nobody's looking.
Going Up The Tower (Carefully)
Most of what we've talked about happens from the ground or with a small lift.
Going up a tower yourself is dangerous. People die doing this every year. The rule is simple. If you don't have a proper climbing harness, a fall-arrest system, and the training to use them, don't go up. Hire someone who has all three.
For inspections that need to be close, a small drone with a camera can show you the blade tips without anyone climbing anything. They're cheap now. Worth the spend.
How Long Will It Last?
A well-maintained home wind turbine should run 15 to 25 years. The blades and tower can last even longer. The generator and bearings are usually the parts that need replacing somewhere along the way.
Compare that to a solar panel, which often runs 30 years untouched. Wind asks more of you. But for a windy site where solar struggles, it pays back the effort.
