Off-grid wind isn't cheap. A complete system can run anywhere from €5,000 for a tiny cabin setup to €100,000+ for a full house off the grid.
Here's where the money actually goes.
The Turbine Itself
The turbine is usually the smallest chunk of the bill.
Small turbines (1 to 3 kW) cost €1,500 to €8,000 depending on quality. Enough for a cabin or to take a chunk out of a household bill.
Medium turbines (5 to 15 kW) cost €15,000 to €40,000. These can run a whole house in a windy area.
Large home turbines (15 to 50 kW) start at €50,000 and go up fast. Aimed at farms, small businesses, or estates.
A higher-quality turbine costs more but lasts longer and breaks less. The cheap ones often fail in 3-5 years. A good one runs for 20+.
The Tower
The tower is where a lot of first-time buyers under-budget. It can cost as much as the turbine itself.
A 10-metre tower might cost €1,000-3,000. A 30-metre tower might cost €10,000-20,000. Plus the concrete foundation, which can run another €2,000-5,000.
Taller is almost always better. Faster, smoother wind up there. A small turbine on a tall tower beats a big turbine on a short one almost every time.

Batteries
For off-grid (no grid connection), batteries are required. The turbine doesn't blow on demand, so you store the power for later.
Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries are the modern standard. Long life, safe, lightweight. A useful home bank runs €5,000-15,000.
Lead-acid batteries are cheaper upfront but last fewer years and are heavier. A comparable lead-acid bank might be €2,000-6,000, but you'll replace it twice as often.

Electronics
The boxes that connect everything add up.
Charge controller: €300-1,500 depending on size.
Inverter: €1,000-5,000. The translator box that turns DC into AC.
BMS: usually built into modern batteries, but if you build your own bank, expect €200-800.
Fuses, switches, monitoring: €300-1,000.
Cabling: €200-1,500 depending on distances and current loads.

Installation
This is where surprises happen.
Setting up a turbine and tower isn't a weekend project. You need a crane to lift the turbine onto the tower. Electricians to wire everything. Sometimes a structural engineer to certify the tower mount.
Installation costs for a small system run €2,000-8,000. For a large system, €10,000-25,000.
If your turbine site is far from your house, you'll also pay for trenching and underground cable. Add €500-2,000 per 100 metres.
Permits And Paperwork
Easy to forget, but real. Most areas need building permits for towers. Some require environmental reviews. A few cities ban small wind entirely.
Permit and inspection costs: €200-2,000.
Maintenance Over Time
A wind turbine needs love. Bearings, brushes, and seals wear out. Blades pick up dirt and ice. Every part of the system has a service interval.
Budget €200-1,000 per year for inspection and routine repair.
Big repairs (replacing a generator, replacing blades) happen every 8-15 years for most turbines. Budget €2,000-10,000 when they come.
The Total
A realistic small off-grid wind system:
- Small turbine + tower + batteries + electronics + install ≈ €12,000-25,000.
A realistic full-house off-grid wind system in a windy area:
- 10-15 kW turbine + 30m tower + 20 kWh battery bank + full electronics + install ≈ €50,000-100,000.
Government incentives can knock 10-30% off in many countries. Check what's available where you live.
Is It Worth It?
A €25,000 system at a 6 m/s site might generate €2,000-3,500 per year in avoided electricity. That's a 7-12 year payback. After payback, you get 10-15 more years of essentially free power.
For the right site, the math works. For the wrong site, you'll lose money.
