The internet is full of cheerful articles saying home wind turbines are great. Here's the more honest version: sometimes they are, sometimes they aren't. The answer comes down to your site, your costs, and how much electricity costs where you live.
Let's break it down.
When A Turbine Pays Back
Three things have to line up for a home wind turbine to make sense.
You need real wind. Average annual wind speed at your site needs to be at least 5 metres per second (about 11 mph). Below that, the turbine just doesn't generate enough to pay for itself. Above that, the math starts working.

Electricity has to be expensive where you live. A turbine pays back faster if you're avoiding 30 cents per kWh than if you're avoiding 12 cents per kWh. Places like Germany, Denmark, the UK, and parts of Australia have very expensive grid power. Places like the US Midwest have cheap grid power. Same turbine, very different payback time.
You need somewhere to put it. Roof mounts are cheaper but limit the height. A tall standalone tower in a yard catches better wind but costs more. If you have neither a tall site nor a yard, this might not work for you.
What It Actually Costs
The price of a home wind system ranges hugely.
Small turbines (around 1-3 kW) cost roughly €3,000 to €10,000 for the turbine alone. Add a tower, a charge controller, batteries, an inverter, and installation, and you're looking at €10,000 to €25,000 total. These are big enough to take a chunk off a typical household electricity bill, but not enough to fully replace the grid.
Medium turbines (around 5-15 kW) cost €20,000 to €60,000 installed. These can power a whole house in a windy area, with batteries to bridge the calm days.
Tower costs scale with height. A 10-metre tower is much cheaper than a 30-metre one. But a 30-metre tower can double your power output by reaching faster, smoother wind.

What You Get Back
A well-sited 10 kW turbine in a 6 m/s wind area might generate 15,000-25,000 kWh per year. The average European household uses around 4,000 kWh per year. So a good system can cover the house and have extra to spare.
In high-electricity-cost areas, that's worth €4,000 to €7,500 per year in avoided bills. The system pays back in 5 to 10 years. After that, the electricity is free for as long as the turbine lasts.
In low-electricity-cost areas, the same generation might only be worth €1,500 per year. Payback stretches to 15+ years, which is close to the turbine's lifespan.
What Could Go Wrong
A turbine isn't a fire-and-forget purchase.
Maintenance. Bearings wear out. Blades pick up grime. Most turbines need yearly inspection and occasional repair. Budget around €200 to €500 per year for upkeep.
Bad year. Wind isn't constant. A calmer-than-average year means less generation. A good site over 10 years averages out, but one bad year can sting.
Permits and rules. Some places make small wind hard. Setback rules, height limits, noise restrictions. Check before you buy.
Bad install. A turbine on a flimsy tower can be ripped off in a storm. A poorly-grounded system can be damaged in a lightning strike. Hire someone who has installed several before, not a generalist.
When You Should Probably Skip Wind
Be honest with yourself. Wind is worth it if:
- You live somewhere with consistent strong wind.
- Electricity is expensive in your area.
- You have room for a tall tower or a windy roof.
- You're willing to pay €15k+ upfront and take the long view.
Wind is probably not worth it if:
- Your site has average wind below 5 m/s.
- Electricity is cheap where you live.
- Local rules make small wind impractical.
- You're hoping for a quick payback (under 5 years).
For many people, solar panels make more sense. Solar works almost everywhere. The hardware is cheaper. The payback is more predictable.
But for the right spot, with the right setup, a wind turbine keeps generating for 20+ years and beats solar in winter and at night.
