Buying a vertical axis turbine is the easy part. Getting the site and the setup right is where most projects succeed or fail. Five things to check first.
How Much Wind Do You Actually Have?
A turbine in a calm spot is an expensive lawn ornament.
Before you spend any money, you need real data on the wind at your site. Not what the regional weather map says. What's actually blowing at the spot you'd mount the turbine.
Cheap anemometers (the spinning-cup wind speed meters) cost less than a hundred euros. Stick one up on a temporary pole at the height you'd put the turbine. Let it run for at least three months. A full year is better.
You're looking for the average wind speed and how often the wind reaches the speeds your turbine needs. A site with 4 m/s average might still be great if it has lots of 6 m/s gusts.

Where Exactly To Put It
A turbine in the wrong spot loses most of its potential.
The biggest enemy is anything that blocks or roughens the wind. Trees, walls, other buildings, even tall fences. The rough air downwind of an obstacle can extend hundreds of metres.
The rule of thumb: the bottom of the turbine should be at least 10 metres above the tallest obstacle within 150 metres of the site.
Higher is almost always better. Every metre of extra height pulls in faster, smoother wind.
Will It Stay Up?
A VAWT puts strange forces on its mount. The blades push and pull in opposite directions as they swing around, so the mount needs to handle twisting forces, not just downward weight.
Whatever the turbine sits on, whether it's a roof bracket, a yard pole, or a building wall, has to be engineered for those forces. A storm-strength gust can rip a poorly-mounted turbine off and throw it across the yard.
This is not the place to cheap out or DIY without knowing what you're doing.
Birds, Bats, And Neighbours
VAWTs are kinder to birds than propeller turbines, but they're not invisible. If your site is on a known migration path, talk to local wildlife groups before installing.
Then there's the human side. A spinning turbine 20 metres from a neighbour's bedroom is going to start an argument, even if it's quiet. Talk to your neighbours first. Show them the noise specs. Offer to install it where it bothers them least.
A small concession upfront beats a court case later.
What The Rules Say
Almost every city, town, and county has rules about wind turbines. Common ones:
- Height limits. Many places cap residential turbine height at 10 or 12 metres.
- Setback rules. The turbine has to be a certain distance from property lines, usually equal to the turbine's total height.
- Noise limits. Decibel caps at the property line.
- Permits. Most installations need a building permit, sometimes also an environmental review.
Check these before you buy anything. Some places make small-scale wind very hard; others actively encourage it with tax credits.
